Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:
The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:
- Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
- Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
- Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.
The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.
- Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
- Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
- High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.
The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:
- Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
- Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
- Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.
The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:
- Helmet (this is a must!)
- Seat pack
- Lock
- Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage
- Spare tubes
- Portable bike pump
- Gloves

After years of being the butt of jokes about being ditzy—and well, not all that smart—blondes may have the last laugh, new research has revealed. According to the study, women with fair hair are more aggressive and confident than brunettes or redheads.
The study suggests that because blondes attract more attention than other women (as they are generally viewed by men as more attractive), they are therefore used to getting their own way. Researchers discovered that the more ‘special’ people feel, judged by physical strength for men and good looks for women, the more likely they are to get angry to reach social goals.
What do you think, ladies? Does hair colour influence determination?

Filed under: Performance, Motorcycle Vyrus 987 C3 4V – Click above for high-res image gallery Generally speaking, though there are a number of different classes of motorcycles in the world, there are a few universal truths that span all makes and models. Chief amongst these similarities is the fact that the bike’s rider always grips a handlebar that’s attached directly to the front forks, which in turn clamp down on the front wheel, thereby providing steering and suspension duties. Even this, though, isn’t quite as universal as you might think. Proof thereof can be seen from tiny Italian motorcycle manufacturer Vyrus, which is headed up by Ascanio Rodorigo, a man who worked with the famed Massimo Tamburini at Bimota in the early ’80s. (You’ll want to see our image gallery below for an explanation on how the front of the bike is held together). This latest machine from Vyrus is called the 987 C3 4V, and one version of the bike – weighing just 339 pounds and boasting a reported 211…

Depending on your budget, the bicycle shop bikes have better components and are made from lighter materials. You can get a decent bike from a department store but you will notice that they are heavy as heck. If you dont have to have a brand new bike, go to the bike shop, scope out the model of style and buy the previous year model.

i would recommend a 1999 or newer r6 or a 2001 or newer cbr600…both have good power for when you get comfortable on it but are controllable for an inexperienced rider. like the guy before me said…start used… you will be really pissed if you drop your brand new bike at a stoplight…not so much if its already got a few scratches… good luck keep riding
Dear oh dear. The public confession that was supposed to resurrect the shattered image of the world’s greatest sportsman and re-establish the bond with his global fan base became – over the course of 13½ toe-curling, ghoulishly riveting minutes – a car crash of spectacular proportions. Tiger Woods looked assured as he walked into a room full of carefully selected guests, but a speech as bizarre in content as in delivery spoke volumes about the curious world inhabited by golf’s former golden child.

Yes, you can wash them but probably shouldn't put them in the dryer, especially if they have real leather knee patches. They make a special kind of detergent for breeches with leather. I have never tried it, but you might want to. TS's aren't cheap and you should do what you can to make them last longer. Also, read the tag – most clothes usually have washing instructions there.

Women's studies exist to uncover the TRUE nature of women.
After all, we are talking about the sex that LIES to their own reflection in the mirror every day. And they actually congratulate themselves when they do an awesome job of it.
They cover up their AGE, their weight, their boobs, buy fake ones, paint their faces, die their hair completely unnatural / opposite colors. Women lie about their motivations, they even lie about why & how they get pregnant……
… and they lie about who the father REALLY is….
No MEN ever lied about the maternity of his children for profit.
Women go through REALLY GREAT lengths to present themselves as something they are NOT. So a man actually needs to STUDY women, to make sure he doesn't get FOOLED.
Women's studies is about uncovering the TRUE nature of women, since women are so busy COVERING IT UP.
