I hate to say but it doesnt sound like it can be fixed. It should be replaced along with other parts that dont work properly. It sounds to me like you may need new cogs and a chain,BUT it is best to take it to a bike mechanic. Have him look at it so that you can get an idea what you are working with Hope this helps.
P.S. basicaly Im saying the teeth on the cogs and/or crank shaft might be worn out.

A proper racing bike may not be suitable as it will not carry panniers so a hybrid may be better. Also, race bikes tend to be very solid and firm, not solid as in heavy but as in no flexibility so on long distance they will inevitably be uncomfortable especially if you are road biking. They are designed really to be doing long distances usually as quick as possible where comfort is not always the priority while still being ride-able for long periods. I know I've not really helped in the end choice but hopefully helped a little. Also, make sure you get your bike in good time so adjustments can be made as bikes can take a good month or two to settle in and for you to get all the settings right. Seat height, seat angle, handlebar height etc

To cumbersome to fold, in folded mode you have to lift it, wheels are to small for comfort, gear ratio is insanely inadequate. Apart from a nifty transform this thing is useless. It is precisely what a folding bike should not be.
