I would get the Trek. I've ridden Trek's for years and they are opening Trek specific concept stores in most major markets, so you can get help from mechanics and staff that know that product line deeply as opposed to a local bike store that sells 4 different lines. You can go to the Trek site to see if there's a concept store near you.

Hmmmm. I have found this to be the case for about 25 years, even in summer, as I struggle with cold hands and feet almost every day no matter what season we’re in. It takes a record breaking hot day for me to relinquish my 13 tog winter duvet or ditch the snuggly knee length warmers!

Well first off when you say trails you mean mountain biking right? The video covers that. Trials there are only two sizes, mod (20″ wheels) and standard (26″ wheels), Thats it no frame sizes. As for four-cross bikes they are mostly 17″ frames, some guys will just look at top tube length and chainstay length. Downhill bikes are exactly the same. All in all trials, 4x, and down hill bikes are made for out of the saddle riding all the time. Frame size is not as big of an issue.
I want to buy a bike from Wal-Mart but I was wondering if there is any way I can test drive it in the store first before I buy it. I know they won’t lt me take the bike outside because I could drive off with it. Will they let me ride it in the store if I ask? I’m 22, but i’m looking for a bike so I can go for a bike ride once a day since the weather is getting nice out

For a three month assignment I wouldn't bother with a bike in the city unless you commonly use one to get around where you are now. It's not hard to get around in the city using the public transportation. I would expect you'd want to get out of the city and explore some on the weekends – that's very easy to do on the trains. Places like Venice and Florence are easy day trips.
You won't get much return on a used bike, but you might be able to find a used one that isn't too expensive. The price of a new bike can be high depending on the bike, but you should be able to find something usable for 100 to 150 euro.

Buying from apple is the ultimate safe way to go about it.
When you buy it from apple it is fully guaranteed that it will be new, and the product you want.
When you buy it from amazon, you risk taking the chance of damaged, different product, used, etc.
Ultimately, it is safer to spend a little extra and buy it directly from apple.
if the path you take is a lot of dirt or gravel, try a mountain bike with full suspension. if you must travel on a road, get a commuter bike. if you're going to be biking a half hour try getting a touring bike with those bags. if you have to be lifting or pushing your bike, try to get one with a low weight. hope it helps!
