Riding a comfort bike up steep hills?

I ride a Schwinn Clear Creek comfort bike from Target. It's 18 speed. But sometimes when I ride my bike, especially up steep hills, it sounds like the chain is slipping. Are my chain-rings too blunt? My bike is less than a week old. Should I stop riding up steep hills? Will it damage the teeth of my chain-rings?
I'm 140 pounds.. if that makes any difference.
